Low Maintenance Ground Cover Plants: Sedum

Maintenance Free Sedum Ground Cover

Sedum produce star-shaped white, yellow, pink, or red flowers and thick, fleshy leaves. Sedum's creeping runners allow it to spread quickly and thus make it effective as a ground cover. Sedum can be easily propagated from both stem cuttings and seeds. The height of sedum plants is very variable, growing anywhere between three and 18 inches off the ground.

These succulents are tough, low maintenance ground cover plants but will not survive foot traffic as they are soft and crush easily. The smaller, low-growing sedums work well in rock gardens, as ground and bank covers and in small areas where unusual texture and colour are wanted. Larger sedums can be effective as borders.

Sedum plants need good drainage, especially in winter. Otherwise they do well in most soils, especially to cover hot, dry sites and slopes.
