Flowering Ground Cover Plants: Phlox
Phlox is a perennial shrub also known as flowering moss and ground pink. There are two main species, moss phlox and creeping phlox, and are both suitable for use as a ground cover. Phlox prefers well drained soil but will grow in moist areas, and both species seed freely, ensuring rapid growth.
Phlox produces a profusion of large flowers, usually about one inch in diameter. Its clusters produce between four and 10 flowers and its broad oval leaves lie close to the ground forming a thick carpet about two inches high.
The more popular of the two species, moss phlox, is the easiest to grow. Moss phlox flowers in a range of spring colours from white to lavender to pink to rose.
Phlox as Sunlit or Shady Ground Cover
While moss phlox will flourish in full sunlight, creeping phlox is best in dappled sunlight. Its flowers are blue and purple and it grows no higher than 12 inches. It's height and rapid growth patterns render it suitable for rock gardens, walls and slopes.
