Evergreen Ground Cover Plants: Ivy

Evergreen Ivy, a Perennial Ground Cover Plant

Ivy is one of the most popular ground covers due to its versatility and durability. You will find 400 varieties of ivy from Japan to Scandinavia - its suitability to this wide range of environments deems ivy tolerant of some very poor conditions. While the best conditions for ivy are moist soil and partial shade, it will withstand full sunlight as well as poor soil and pollution.

Ivy is an ascending or trailing evergreen plant so it can be used as ground cover or a climbing vine. In ivy, tiny aerial rootlets take hold in soil and on surfaces enabling it to spread across lawns and climb walls, houses and other plants. As ground cover, ivy is often successful where other plants would fail.

The ivy plant has leaves in every shade of green as well as pink, cream and yellow. In autumn tiny flowers appear followed by black berries (which are poisonous!). During flowering the tear-shaped leaves alter their shape to the adult form of the rounded lobe. Ivy will grow from six to eight inches in height.

Maintenance of ivy is minimal. During particularly dry seasons ivy should be watered and its rapid growth mean pruning may be necessary to control shape.
